About Nonograms

What is picross (nonogram)?

Nonograms are picture logic puzzles with cells in a grid that are colored or left blank to reveal a hidden picture. The choice of which cells to color or leave blank is determined by the numbers that are placed on the top and the side of the grid. This brings about the concept of picture crosswords, and therefore, the name Picross. Nonograms originated from Japan when Non Ishida
won a design competition by using skyscrapers lights to imitate the grid pictures that are characteristic of the game. In the subsequent years, the game made great strides by making it to popular magazines in Japan and finally traversing to other parts of the world.

How to solve nonograms?

Use of contradictions. This approach is applicable for complex puzzles that require advanced reasoning when there are no simpler methods to use. With the use of contradictions, one has to use a form of temporary marker to facilitate corrections.
Mathematical approach. This method adds the value of all the clues given, with each space given a value of 1. The sum is then subtracted from the total number of cells in the row/column. If there is a clue that has a numerical value that is greater than the difference obtained, the clue will have some of its cells filled.
